Hate your job?

Did you know that God cares about your job performance? I was thinking about this while working my new job as an admissions advisor. I am currently in the works of starting my own magazine and has become very preoccupied with that. I have been letting things lapse a bit while taking care of other business. This job isn't my dream, this isn't exactly where I want to be right now so I guess I don't have to really worry about it too much, right? Then the scripture Colossians 3:23-24 came to me during one of my personal Bible studies. "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for me, since you know that you will receive an inheritance form the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." If I let this job, I was blessed with after being out of work for such a long time, lapse then why would God trust me with anything bigger or better? If you hate what you do, change your attitude. When you stop complaining and hating, you open yourself up for God to do His works in your life. Praise God for those long hours. Thank God for that small paycheck. Put your all into it and God will bless you with something better. He will make a way for you. Genesis 21:22 says that "God is with you in everything that you do." So pray before you do that report. Or praise when filling that shipment order. Whatever you do allow God to establish the work of your hands. (Psalm 90:17)

I'm not sure it's all that admirable to be thankful for a small paycheck--especially if you're deserving of more. I wonder why humility in the name of Christ means accepting personal unhappiness and injustice. I'm not sure that's what Christ's message was intended, but only one of the ways that humans twist that message to their own ends--whether positive or negative. I grew up as a studying Christian and followed that up with continued theological study, so i certainly respect religion and its adherents, but I'm alarmed when people need to make the Scriptures a concrete guide for their actions--especially when i fear it means acceptance of things one need not necessarily accept (like injustice) but also to an unhealthy impetus to JUDGE others. I mean, are all bitching and complaining people just bitching and complaining people or might some of them be victims? or people who need assistance? or people who are just expressing a real feeling? Suppression ain't all it's cracked up to be. And neither is "living by the Scriptures."

I wasn't saying that we should suffer and God wants us to suffer. No. I believe God blesses and wants to bless us but first we have to have faith and not complain. Thank God for the things that you do have. There is someone always worst off. Also suffering leads to growth in life. When you look back on problems you conquered, I'm sure you learned something from it and it made you stronger. God is our Father and He desires for us to blessed and to grow in life.

Keep on being positive--it helps those of us who are struggling to hear words of encouragement like yours....I read your freelance add and decided to check out your blog. I have been fighting the demons in my head lately but still walk to the top of the mountain each day and pray. No matter how I feel!

I like to dabble in philosophy but having knowledge of God as our creator sure stops doctrines cold! :)

Dear anonymous,

"I wonder why humility in the name of Christ means accepting personal unhappiness and injustice." Following Christ is all about learning what are the true priorities in life. And in fact, big pay checks are not in themselves tickets to happiness, though they can be a blessing if they are viewed in their proper place. When I see my primary identity as a beloved child of God, a daughter of my Father who "owns the cattle on a thousand hills" then I don't have to scratch and claw with the rest of the world to try to get my little square of turf. The Bible doesn't teach you to turn down that raise! In fact, a slave is instructed to be a GREAT slave while he is one, but if he gets the opportunity to become free (legitimately) take it. What the Bible teaches is that most of the things that are popularly viewed as the keys to happiness aren't. Jesus, God Himself, came and was born in a dirty barn, lived as a poor carpenter, made chairs and tables for twenty years or so, and died in the equivalent of an electric chair or a gallows. Could the message be any more straight up? Our ultimate fulfillment does not come from what we have or the apparent power we wield. So whether we have or don't have, the important thing is to know from whence comes your happiness. As for accepting injustice, there's a distinction in this area. Christians are told to right injustices FOR OTHERS. Other people's complaints may be a sign that there's a job for a Christian to do in that situation. If you look down through history, Christians have been prime movers in fighting injustice through the centuries, and building hospitals and orphanages and educating, etc. etc. But each individual Christian is called on to trust her/his Lord and be thankful. If we are not thankful for what we have now, we will not long be thankful for our new acquisitions, either!

I believe that God gives us many opportunities to prove how trustworthy we can be. He sees how faithful we can be with the small things and then blesses us with larger. I also sit at my job daydreaming of being a successful writer and movie producer. But it was I who chose the job and the pay that came along with it. I know that there is better out there for me and only I can take that first step to my destiny.

You don't have to make your dreams come true alone. Believe God's words and His love for you. when you doubt that you can't do it, you doubt God's promises to you
